| Christmas Time in The City Can you smell the cinnamon? Can you hear jingle bells in the air? It’s Christmas time in the city! Each city has special events this time of year to help enhance your Yule Tide glee. One that we never miss is Christmas in The Park in Arab. Each year the Arab City Park glows with over 2 million lights. The lighting ceremony is November 27th and you must be there when they flip the switch and the park lights up. If you are still sleeping of your turkey coma and miss the opening night don’t worry, there are several weekends with live music and entertainment. This is a “Must Do” Christmas tradition to add to the list. Each city also features a hometown Christmas parade. You can check the calendar of events to see a complete list of dates and times. If you have never been to a local Christmas parade make this the year to go. There is nothing quite like your towns Christmas parade. There are the usuals, like beautiful church floats, dance teams of all ages, bands trumpeting Good King Wenceslas, and fire trucks with Santa. But every now and then, if your really lucky, there will be a magical float. I will never forget the year I saw an amazing float covered in white lights and all that was on it was a young man in a tuxedo with a sign saying “Will you marry me?” My friend and I ran about a mile down the parade route to see what she said. Although we had no idea who “She” was! That’s what the parades are about. It’ s time to celebrate the holidays with perfect strangers but also as a community together. By the way - she said, “Yes” For all the Sailing Santas out there, you must sail on down to Guntersville for the “Stars on the Water” boat parade. When Christmas lights reflect off the beautiful Guntersville lake you almost feel transported to Key West for the night. The only difference is that we will need plenty of hot chocolate to stay warm. Make plans for cold weather, blankets, warm clothes and lots of loved ones to snuggle with. With all the bright lights of the season, it is very easy to forget why we celebrate it in the first place. The singing Christmas Tree at Arab First Baptist Church is December 6th-8th. Make the trip to Arab that weekend – it is worth it. When all the gifts are wrapped and all the food purchased, come to Arab for the Candlelight Christmas Eve Communion. The Arab First United Methodist Church has two services with an open communion, special music and a message of hope. Make this the year when traditions are born! There is something happening near you that will make the season a little more special. Remember to check the “Calendar of Events” for times and dates and go online at www.thesouthernvillage. com for more info. Merry Christmas for all of us at The Southern Village! |
